Relationships between Achievement Motivation and Mental Health in Poor College Students:The Moderating and Mediating Effect of Social Support

Abstract
Objective To examine the effect of achievement motivation on mental health of poor college students,and the moderating and mediating effect of social support.Methods The Social Support Rating Scale( SSRS) ,the Achievement Motivation Scale( AMS) and some items from the Symptom Checklist(SCL-90)were used in the survey.A sample of 358 poor college students participated in the in-vestigation.Results There was a significant negative correlation between mental health and achievement motivation(r=-0.448,P<0.01).Furthermore,there was a significant mediating effect of social support(β=-0.055,P<0.01),whereas there was not a significant moderating effect of social support(t=0.141,P>0.05).The direct size effect of achievement motivation with mental health (β=-0.353,P<0.001)were higher than the indirect size effect of social support(β=-0.055,P<0.01).Conclusion Culturing primarily the achievement motivation and improving secondarily the social support system may be useful to improve mental health for poor college students.关键词
