Abstract
Objective: To review whether the sternocleidomastoid muscle flap reconstruction was appropriate to prevent the incidence of Frey syndrome and facial contour deformity after parotidectomy. Methods:29 cases undergone parotdec-tomy were involed in this study. 18 patients were randomly undergone reconstruction of the surgical defect with a stern-ocleidomastoid muscle flap after parotidectomy;the other 11patients did not receive a flap. After 6-12 months, all patients were evaluated via a short questionnaire, the starch-iodine test, and a visual examination. Results: In muscle flap restoration group, non of the 18 patients experienced abnormal facial contour deformity, and none of them were sweating, flushing or warmth while eating. In non-flap group, 5 patients showed a mild positive starch-iodine test, and all 11 patients manifested facial contour deformity. The difference was significant. Conclusion: Sternocleidomastoid muscle flaps are effi-cient for preventing Frey syndrome and facial contour deformity following parotidectomy.关键词
