Abstract

Dicranopteris dichotoma is the most important understory vegetation in the eroded area of red soil in southern China,but its contribution to the accumulation of soil organic carbon(SOC)and soil total nitrogen(STN)is poorly understood. In this study,this paper quantifies SOC and STN storage between D. dichotoma-covered soil(MQ)and soil without D. dichotoma coverage(CK)in a severely eroded land and two Pinus massoniana plantations(PM)(10-year-old and 30-year-old). Results show that:The cov-erage and biomass of MQ sees the lowest in the severely eroded land,but it increases significantly in 10-year-old and 30-year-old Pinus massoniana. The SOC and STN storage of MQ treatment are significantly higher than those in the bare land of CK(P ﹤ 0. 05). Compared to severely eroded land,SOC storage in-crease by 153% and 296% in 10-year-old and 30-year-old Pinus massoniana,respectively,and the figure for STN is 24% and 101% . Such results imply that the accumulation rate of SOC is faster than that of STN with Pinus massoniana treatment,and the C:N ratio is generally higher with MQ covered than in bare land. In conclusion,D. dichotoma has a significant effect on SOC and STN accumulation in red soil erosion regions.
