Abstract

In this work, maleic anhydride grafted polypropylenee(MAH⁃g⁃PP) as coupling agent was added to high den⁃sity polyethylene(HDPE) and bamboo flour(BF) composites which were processed by internal mixer and hot⁃pressing technology. The results showed that the properties of composites were significantly improved after adding MAH⁃g⁃PP. The optimum additive amount is 5%, at this level, the values of hygroscopicity and water absorption of composites were the smallest, and the values of modulus of rupture(MOR) and modulus of elasticity(MOE) were increased by 68% and 30�4%, respectively. The tensile strength and impact strength were increased by 53�7% and 75%, respectively. Howev⁃er, when the additive amount of MAH⁃g⁃PP reached 8%, the values of MOR, tensile strength and impact strength de⁃creased. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy( FTIR) confirmed that the grafting reaction happened between free hy⁃droxyls of bamboo flour and acid anhydride of MAH⁃g⁃PP.
