Abstract

Bisphenol A(BPA), an endocrine disruptor, has showed obvious toxic effects on life system. However, little information is avail-able regarding the toxic effects of BPA on crops. A hydroponic experiment was carried out to investigate the effects of BPA on chlorophyll fluorescence in tomato(Solanum lycopersicum)and lettuce(Lactuca sativa)seedlings. Treatments with 1.5 mg·L-1 and 3.0 mg·L-1 BPA de-creased the F0, but increased the Fv/Fm,ΦPSⅡ, ETR, qP and qN in tomato and lettuce seedlings. Supplying 6.0 mg·L-1 BPA did not change the fluorescence parameters in tomato seedlings, whereas it increased the F0 and qN in lettuce seedlings. At 10 mg·L-1 and 17.2 mg·L-1 BPA, the F0 was increased, but other fluorescence parameters were inhibited in tomato and lettuce seedlings, except increased qN in tomato seedlings at 10 mg·L-1 BPA. All fluorescence parameters could be restored when BPA was removed. However, the recovery decreased with increasing concentrations of BPA. Greater effects on the fluorescence parameters were observed in lettuce than in tomato seedlings, while the recovery was faster in tomato seedlings than lettuce seedlings. In conclusion, the effects of BPA on the chlorophyll fluorescence parameters are different in different crops. Chlorophyll fluorescence could resume to various degrees when BPA stress is removed.
