Effects of Nitrogen Fertilization on Inter-competitiveness in a Barley-pea Intercropping System

Abstract
A potexperim entw ascarriedouttoinvestigatetheeffectsofnitrogenfertilizationratesontheinter-com petitiveness of a barley-pea intercropping system , and to quantify the relationship betw een the relative com petitiveness and the production of crops for optim izing m anagem ent of pastoral legum e intercropping techniques in term s of nitrogen fertilization.O urresults show ed thatthe land equivalentratio(LER )ofbarley w as greaterthan one during crop tillering and grain-filling stages,indicating the intercropping advantage;w hereas itw as less than one during crop jointing and heading stages, indicating the inferior perform ance. W ith high levels of nitrogen (N 2), the LER of barley during the tillering,jointing and grain-filling stages w ere 1.17,1.03 and 1.34,respectively and w ere significantly higherthan those w ith low levels ofnitrogen(N 1),indicating thata high nitrogen levelm ay resultin the certain intercropping advantage of barley.D uring the sym biotic period,the relative com petitiveness(A bp) ofbarley under no nitrogen(N 0),N 1 and N 2 w ere-0.1066,-0.2133,and -0.1407 during the tillering stage,0.0664,-0.0144 and 0.0276 atharvest,and 0.1328,0.0425 and 0.0187 during the w hole grow ing period,respectively,suggesting that nitrogen fertilization m ay adjust the A bp in the barley-pea intercropping system .Production of intercropping system w as positively correlated w ith the A bp during the grain-filling stage, and correlated w ith the m ean relative com petitiveness in a form of quadratic curve. The average relative com petitiveness ofbarley w as 7.6% higherin N 0 than thatin N 2,w hile itw as less than zero in the N 1 treatm ent. These results m ight suggest that an appropriate increase of the com petitiveness advantage of barley during the grain-filling stage is helpfulto im prove the totalproduction of a intercropping system .Therefore,nitrogen fertilization played an im portantrole in im pacting the relative com petitiveness and the production of the barley-pea intercropping system .关键词
