Abstract

Effects of the ten major tributaries in the Inner Mongolia on variations of runoff and sediment load conditions as well as erosion and sedi-mentation in the main stream of the Yellow River were analyzed. Results show that the sediment load from the ten major tributaries causes an increase of 13. 6% ,26. 8% and 55. 6% in annual average sediment concentration entering into the reach from Sanhuhekou to Toudaoguai;and an increase of 13. 9% ,29. 0% and 57. 6% in annual average incoming sediment coefficient in time periods of 1953 -1968,1969 - 1986 and 1987 - 2010 respec-tively. Sediment loads from Sanhuhekou and the ten major tributaries in the time period of 1953 - 1986 cause an amount of sedimentation of 15. 7million tons and 8. 8 million t and the corresponding sedimentation ratios are 11. 1% and 36. 7% respectively. In the period of 1987 -2010,the a-mount of sedimentation is 19. 0 million t and 1. 39 million t and the corresponding sedimentation ratios are 36. 9% and 50. 2% respectively. In gener-al,the sediment loads from the ten major tributaries cause water and sediment conditions entering the reach from Sanhuhekou to Toudaoguai to deterio-rate further. The sedimentation ratio of the sediment load from the ten major tributaries is bigger than that of the sediment load from Sanhuhekou. As runoff from the upstream decreases gradually,the effect of sediment load from the ten major tributaries becomes more and more significant.
