Abstract

Marine research requires ongoing technological development; i.e., the construction of new and more accurate instruments that can provide novel insights into ocean processes. The Oceanology International 2014 event provided the opportunity to evaluate recent developments in different technology areas and consider how they might be used to study the oceans. The event comprised more than 500 exhibiting companies from 36 countries, and more than 100 international speakers took part in 12 conferences. The main panel discussions covered ocean observation systems, underwater positioning and communication, unmanned underwater vehicles, offshore hydrographic and geophysical site investigations, oil and gas, maritime security, and offshore renewables. The conference highlights included: (1) unmanned underwater vehicles constructed from new materials, novel power sources, and advances in computing and sensors; and (2) three new panel discussions, on subsea mining, aquaculture, and the management of balast water.
