Vernacular Architecture and“Jiangnan Style”-Exemplified by the Design of Haining Branch in Chinese Silk Museum
摘要
Abstract
Vernacular architecture in the Chinese context is often misunderstood as a binary notion as against the “urban,” the “modern,” or the “western.” The case study discusses on the general discrepancy between the “inside” and “outside” of vernacular architecture, or between its new program and assigned traditional façade. It argues that in contemporary China, a collaged “vernacular architecture” is inevitable, making the static “style” out of question. The contemporary vernacular architecture will need “build the site,” reconfiguring the general context of space-making from scratch. By systematically creating new local characteristics, architecture does not adapt itself to landscape settings but invent a landscape of its own.关键词
