Abstract

To shorten the production cycle of arachidonic acid ( ARA )⁃rich oil and increase the productivity,we studied the effects of different substrate feeding strategies on the production of ( ARA)⁃rich oil by Mortierella alpina. Batch fermentation and residual glucose feedback fed⁃batch fermentation were studied, as well as a repeated fed⁃batch fermentation that was developed on the basis of residual glucose feedback fed⁃batch. Compared with batch fermentation, ARA productivity in residual glucose feedback fed⁃batch fermentation increased from 0�93 to 1�33 g/( L·d) . Four batches were carried out for repeated fed⁃batch culture, in which the biomass remained stable around 30 g/L and lipid contents remained stable around 50%. ARA contents in total fatty acid were 42�81%, 43�17%, 42�30%, and 39�71%,respectively.
