Abstract

The oil companies listed on the New York stock exchange must obey the SEC ( Securities and Ex-change Commission) oil and gas rules in estimating oil and gas reserves. Right understanding the definitions of SEC proved reserves is the basis for determining estimation method and parameters. In the initial stage of field development, the volumetric method is the best estimation method which is also one of the determined methods accepted by SEC. The paper starts from the understanding of SEC rules and analyzes the determination on each parameter in the volumetrics, in which, two parameters, i. e. area and net pay, are primary points to be de-scribed. According to SEC definition of proved reserves, proved areas are limited by the lowest known hydrocar-bons as seen in a well penetration or undrilled acreage which is continuous from production when using reliable technology proof. The determination of net pay is accordant to cut off standards; other parameters obey the SEC rules of conservatives and reveal the core property in SEC reserve estimation:“reasonable certainty”.
