Seismic Analysis of Frame Structures with Self-centering Friction Energy Dissipative Braces

Abstract
Self-centering friction energy dissipative ( SCFED) brace is a novel bracing system that has both energy dissipative and self-centering capacity. A 9-storey benchmark steel frame structure model was equipped with SCFED braces. OpenSEES software was employed to conduct nonlinear static pushover analysis and dynamic time-history analysis. As compared to buckling restrained brace ( BRB) frames, the seismic performance of SCFED frames was investigated. Results show that SCFED frames have smaller peak storey drift angel than BRB frames. The storey drift distributes more uniformly along the structural height for SCFED frames. The average residual peak storey drift angel of BRB frames is 10-20% of peak storey drift angel, while it is only 1-2% for SCFED frames. This demonstrates that SCFED can effectively control the structural residual deformation. However, since the stiffness transfer is acute in the re-centering process of SCFED, the storey acceleration of SCFED frames is larger than BRB frames.关键词
