On the Pronunciation and Meaning of Sima Qian’ s Name
摘要
Abstract
So far, the pronunciation and meaning of the characters in Sima Qian’ s name have not been discussed in details.To fill this gap, this paper explores the traditional semantic relationship of“ming” and“zi” to define the character“chang” etymologi-cally, which is pronounced in the third tone and means“developing, growing” in the name.This character shares the same semantic field of“changing” with another character“qian” in the same name.Base on this definition, we further discuss the historical impli-cation of the naming of Sima Qian and the relationship between his name and his historical thoughts.关键词
