An Analysis Method for Forced Power Oscillation Source Detection

Abstract
Online detection of forced power oscillation source plays a crucial role in safe operation of power systems. Based on phasor measurement unit (PMU) measurements and swing equations of synchronous generator, this paper proposed a method to calculate the fluctuation component of generator unit’s mechanical power in the process of low frequency oscillation. By analysing the phasor relationship among mechanical input, electric output, and rotor speed (frequency), this paper proposed an online method for forced power oscillation detection. If a generation unit is not a forced oscillation source, and it is oscillating simply responding to external disturbance, then the phase angle of mechanical power fluctuation lags electrical power fluctuation. The proposed method is independent of power system model. Interactions among different generation units are decoupled by the adoption of PMU measurements, thus, errors introduced by power system model can be avoided, and moreover, the complexity of analysis algorithm is greatly reduced. Actual examples recorded by wide-area measurement system (WAMS) show that, the method is effective to determine whether the monitored generator is a source of forced oscillation or not.关键词
