Study on MMC-HVDC Switching Scheme Between Grid-Connected and Passive Islanding Mode

Abstract
ABSTRACT:It is effective to use modular multilevel converter based high voltage direct current (MMC-HVDC) and AC lines in parallel to supply power for important loads, and so MMC-HVDC needs to be able to switch steadily between grid-connected mode and islanding mode. The switch processes between grid-connected mode and islanding mode of MMC- HVDC were analyzed in this paper, and a local information based MMC control mode switching scheme was proposed. Besides, an MMC droop control scheme was derived by modifying the controller for supplying power to passive network, which can seamlessly switch between the above two modes. The two switching schemes were tested and compared by simulations on PSCAD. Results show that MMC can switch steadily between grid-connected mode and islanding mode through either of the two schemes. These two schemes have both advantages and disadvantages, and the MMC should choose proper schemes according to specific control objectives in practice.关键词
