Abstract

The parasitic wasps Tiphia popilliavora Rohwer are excellent natural enemy to control underground pest Holotrichia parallela Motschulsky in Rizhao City, Shandong Province. The biology and ecology of the T. popilliavora and its control effect on the level of H. parallela were continuously observed in laboratory and in field from 2008 to 2014. T. popilliavora are external parasitic natural enemy which have a certain specialization for the host and have only one host. Females lay eggs in vitro host, the natural parasitic rate is from 36.4%to 48.3%, its offspring also complete development in vitro host. The emergence and unearthed time of wasps which had over the winter were from mid July to late August each year, the peak period were from late July to early August, this is just consistent with the hatch peak of H. parallela larvae, reflecting the significant following effect. T. popilliavora has become a local dominant natural enemies in bumble bee species after planting kenaf, help moving and protecting the wasps year after year. The population density of H. parallela has significantly decreased from 14.37/m2 to 0.21/m2 in peanut fields in Rizhao City, Shandong Province, showing a good control pest effect of help moving and protecting natural enemies.
