Levonorgestrel-releasing Intrauterine System for Endometrial Lesions in Patients with Breast Cancer:A Clinical StudyΔ

Abstract
OBJECTIVE:To evaluate therapeutic and preventive efficacy of levonorgestrel⁃releasing intrauterine system (LNG⁃IUS)for tamoxifen⁃induced endometrial polyps in patients with breast cancer. METHODS:From Jan. 2012 to Feb. 2014, a total of 30 postmenopausal women with breast cancer treated with tamoxifen in outpatient department of The First Affiliated Hospital of Soochow University ( hereinafter referred to as “our hospital”) were randomly assigned to either treatment group receiving LNG⁃IUS followed by oral administration of TAM(18 cases)or control group receiving TAM alone orally ( 12 cases ). Irregular vaginal bleeding, endometrial thickness acquired by transvaginal ultrasonography and endometrial pathology acquired by vacuum dilatation and curettage at 6 and 12 months were analyzed respectively. RESULTS:At 12 months, compared with the control group,no significant increase in irregular vaginal bleeding was noted for the treatment group;the endometrial thickness and the incidence of endometrial polyps in the treatment group were significantly decreased as compared with the control group ( P<0�05 ) . CONCLUSIONS: LNG⁃IUS can reduce the risk of endometrial polyps by about 6 times. It is advisable for women with breast cancer treated with oral TAM to use LNG⁃IUS for protection endometrium by avoiding repeated transvaginal ultrasonography and curettage surgery.关键词
