Grommet Tympanostomy Tube Insertion Complications in Children with Otitis Media with Effusion

Abstract
Objective To investigate complications in children with otitis media with effusion who were treated with grommet tympanostomy tube insertion. Methods From August 2007 to September 2008, 156 patients (72 males and 84 fe-males, 299 ears) with otitis media with effusion who received grommet tympanostomy tube insertion were consecutively en-rolled. They were followed up six months to five years after the operation for the time of tube extrusion and other complications. Results Otorrhea occurred in 17 ears (5.7%). Granulation tissue was found in 3 ears (1%). Complications after tympanostomy tube extusion included tympanosclerosis (35.1%), persistent perforation (4.6%), atrophy (22.1%), retraction(19.1%) and medi-al displacement of tubes (0.7%). The average tube extrusion time was 11.5 months. Conclusion Complications in tympanosto-my tube insertion are common. Tympanosclerosis, tympanic membrane atrophy and otorrhea are the most frequently happening complications. But in the majority of these complications, there is no need for any management.关键词
