Abstract

The heat and mass transfer in a fix bed of activated carbon (AC) for SO2 adsorption and the variation of the ratio of desorption gas condensability were investigated based on a double bed five steps pressure swing adsorption (PSA). The results show that the temperature curves of different heights change with the change of periodicity, and that mass transfer mainly occurs in the area of 0.08−0.15 m. The concentration of gas phase composition decreases gradually with the increase of adsorption column height. It enters a stability stage after 400 cycles. No SO2 is detected when the bed height is higher than 0.60 m. During the purge desorption and vacuum desorption stage, the ratio of desorption gas condensability increases, then tends to stable, and finally declines with the increase of desorption time. In experiment conditions, the best operation time for each stage are adsorption with 170 s, purge desorption with 15 s, vacuum desorption with 180 s, and balance pressure with 3 s. The average condensability of SO2 in desorption gas can achieve 2.0.
