Abstract

Effective method on sound source localization is needed to automatically monitor and recognize the vehicle with illegal honk. The accuracy of time delay estimation is of great importance in sound source localization. Some car horn sounds were sampled by a dual channel instrument. Four methods on time delay estimating, i.e., the difference between times corresponding to two relevant feature points, the cross-correlation method, the direct reading method and the method of moving A-weighted sound pressure level curve, were tested comparatively. Results show that the direct reading method works best, while the cross-correlation method comes second. For different positions of car horn sounds, when the car was far away from the reference microphone in the direction of the connecting line between two microphones, the accuracy of estimating time delay declined among three methods excluding the cross-correlation method. For the cross-correlation method, the duration of a car horn sound has no influence on the difference of sound propagation distances between any one of two microphones and the sound source when the sampled sound contains a whole honking event.
