Effects of copper based foliar fertilizer and controlled release fertilizer on growth and leaf protective enzyme activities of pepper

Abstract
Objectives]According to characteristics of fertilizer loving, fertilizer tolerance and strict requirement for water, the objective of this experiment was to study effects of copper-based foliar fertilizers ( CBFF ) and controlled-release fertilizers ( CRF) on yield, quality, copper partitioning and activities of protective enzymes in plants of pepper, and to provide a theoretical basis for high-yielding and cultivation of pepper.[Methods]With the cultivar, Chifeng Niujiaowang as the test material, a pot experimental design was a factorial arrangement in a split-plot with two replicates.The main plots were CKW ( sprayed with water ) and CBFF ( copper-based foliar fertilizers), and the sub-plots were NF (no fertilizer), CCF (common compound fertilizers), CRF (controlled-release fertilizers) and CRF +W ( controlled-release fertilizers with water retaining agent ) .There were eight treatments as the combination both foliar fertilizer and soil fertilizer.Pepper fruits were harvested and weighted based on pepper maturation.Fresh leaves and a portion of fruits were collected and calculated in the fruit maturation period, and the concentrations of Cu, Fe and Zn in the plants were determine by using atomic absorption spectrometry.[Results]In 2011 and 2012 pepper growing seasons, the different interactions of CBFF and CRF have significant effects on the yield, and the optimal combination of fertilization for the yield is CBFF+CRF+W. Under the optimal application condition, the yields are significantly increased by 24.1%and 29.0%, respectively in the first year (2011) and the second year (2012) compared to CKW+CRF+W.In growing seasons, compared to the spraying clear water, the foliar spraying copper fertilizer significantly increases copper concentration in the pepper plants.Compared with the utilization of CRF+W, the Cu concentration of pepper fruits is increased by 103.9% with CBFF.Meanwhile, the active oxygen that is produced by copper based foliar fertilizers leads to increase the superoxide dismutase ( SOD) , peroxidase ( POD) activities, while the application of CBFF decreases the catalase (CAT) activity.By applying the CRF+W, the SOD activity of the spraying CBFF is increased by 26.6%.In the treatment with CBFF+CRF, higher POD activity and lower CAT activity are observed in leaves of pepper.Considering a variation in the content in pepper fruits, the treatments of CBFF+CRF and CBFF+CRF+W increase the soluble protein and vitamin C contents by a range from 12.8%-178.4%.[Conclusions] These results indicate that the appropriate combined fertilization management can increase micronutrients contents in peppers and improve the yield and nutrition quality of pepper.关键词
