Abstract

A great quantity of chemical energy is contained in refinery wastewater. When microbial fuel cell is used to treat this wastewater, the chemical energy could be recovered in electricity form simultaneously with water purification and the double pressure from energy shortage and environmental pollution can be relieved. In this paper, a two-chambered microbial fuel cell (MFC) with refinery wastewater as its fuel was constructed and started-up to study the characteristic of electricity production and oil pollutants degradation of MFC. Results indicate that the voltage output of MFC rises with the increase of anolyte concentration;the open circuit voltage of MFC is 550.49 mV, the maximum power density output is 262.8 mW⋅m−3, the total resistance of MFC is 957Ωand the ohmic resistance is 482Ωwhich consists of 50.4%of the total resistance. The general water quality testing and GC-MS analysis of the influx and effluent of MFC indicate that the degradation efficiency of COD in refinery wastewater reaches to 81.8%, main organic pollutants in refinery wastewater used in this paper are volatile phenols, arene and aliphatic hydrocarbon, and volatile phenols and arene are adsorbed and degraded firstly, and acid, ester and alcohol compounds are generated during anaerobic metabolic reaction.
