Abstract

A novel organobentonite (HEMBP-B) was prepared by modifying the bentonite (B) with hexamethylene bis-pyridine dibromides (HEMBP), and its structure was characterized by XRD, BET, FT-IR and SEM. At the same time, the modification conditions were optimized. The maximum adsorbed amount and adsorption equilibrium of HEMBP on bentonite appear when during modification the dosage of pyridine cation in HEMBP is 1.0 CEC, L/S = 50 mL:1 g, t = 3 h, T = 60℃, pH = 6.26 (natural). In addition, the effects of various factors on the adsorption of phenol by HEMBP-B were studied. The results show that the removal ratio of phenol from the phenol contenting solution with original phenol concentration of 50 mg⋅L−1 can reach about 80%when the dosage of pyridine cation in the used HEMBP is 1.0 CEC, and the removing conditions are T=45℃, t = 2.5 h and pH = 6.46 (natural). Besides, it was found that the Freundlich model can describe the adsorption isotherm well. This study not only enriches the kinds of absorbent, but also provides reference for the wastewater treatment applications of clay modified by short chain pyridine salts.
