Abstract

The drop size distribution in a spray tower was obtained by means of the photographic technique with the experimental system of air/ water. The Rosin-Rammler (R-R) function was applied to fit the cumulative distribution of droplet diameter. The effects of operating conditions on the homogeneous index and the characteristic diameter of droplets were investigated. Moreover, the influences of homogeneous index on drop size distribution and specific surface area were analyzed. The results show that the drop size cumulative distribution and the R-R function are in very good agreement. The homogeneous index of droplets decreases with increasing spray flux, and increases with the increase of superficial gas velocity. The characteristic diameter of droplets declines with increasing spray flux or superficial gas velocity. Dimensionless correlations were proposed for the homogeneous index and the characteristic diameter, and the calculation results are in good agreement with the actual data. The specific surface area increases with increasing the homogeneous index or intensifying the breakup of large scale droplets.
