Abstract

During 2008 to 2013, mosquito specimens were collected in the wetlands of arid region of northern Xinjiang, including IrtySh River wetland, Ili River wetland, Bulgan River wetland, Emin River wetland and plains Ebinur Lake wetland, and the population composition and geographical divisions of mosquitoes were analysed . A total of 20 733 mosquitoes were collected, belonging to 5 genera and 16 species, of them Ma.uniformis was the first recorded species in Xinjiang.Ae.vexans was the dominant species in IrtySh River wetland, Ili River wetland and Bulgan River wetland, Ae. caspius was the dominant species in Emin River wetland , and An.byrcanus was the dominant species in plains Ebinur Lake wetland.Among the 16 species of mosquitoes listed, 11 species ( 68.75%) were the Palearctic mosquitoes, and the remainder 5 species ( 31.25%) distributed in both Palearctic and Oriental Region, no typical Oriental species was collected in the area investigated.There was less mosquito species in the wetlands of arid region of northern Xinjiang with relatively poor faunistic component, mainly desertification species.The dominant mosquito species was clear in these areas with huge populations making serious harm.
