Abstract

Language philosophy is an important sphere in western world’s philosophical study in the 20th century. With it, the traditional interpretation of language instrumentalism has been reoriented. Language is now considered to feature subjectivity, embodiment and cultural attributes. Language philosophy has exerted significant and far-reaching influences on western thinking and culture, including language teaching. Under the perspective of lan⁃guage philosophy, language teaching is by no means a mere memory of skills by way of training. Instead it is an art aiming to cultivate people’s spiritual life. Language and philosophy are mutually supportive. To reflect on language teaching from the standpoint of language philosophy and take relevant reformative steps will broaden the academic perspective of language teaching, upgrade its level and promote the philosophical turn of langue teaching.
