The effects of growth hormone on RANKL and BMPs expression during orthodontic tooth movement in rats

Abstract
Objective:To investigate the effects of growth hormone(GH) on receptor activator of nuclear factor-kappa ligand (RANKL) and bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs) expression during orthodontic tooth movement in experimental rats. Method:Forty Wistar rats (gender:male;age:7 weeks) were randomly divided into control and experimental groups.A force of 50 g was applied to move the left upper first molars mesially.The experimental and control groups received abdomi-nal subcutaneous injections of growth hormone(GH;0.15 IU/kg/d) and equivalent volumes of saline,respectively.The rats were sacrificed on days 3,7,10 and 14. Sections of maxillary first molar and periodontal tissue were prepared for immunohis-tochemical staining of RANKL and BMPs,then being proceeded with the image analysis and statistics. Result:The expres-sion of RANKL on days 3 and 7 enhanced significantly in GH-treated groups (P <0.05),while the expression of OPG was clearly different from the control groups on days 10 and 14 (P <0.05). Conclusion:Short-term GH administration can alter the expression of RANKL and BMPs in the periodontal tissues,suggesting that GH involves in bone remodeling during or-thodontic tooth movement.关键词
