Abstract
In his most famous novel Tess of the D’Urbervilles, Thomas Hardy’s delineation of Angel Clare not only criticizes the social reality, but also has an important factor of modernism which works together throughout. It’s the alienation. By reading the text and analyzing Angel Clare under the social context, the theme of himself alienation can be probed out:Angel Clare’s alien-ation from the traditional doctrines of Christianity, which then caused the alienations from his lover and from self. All of these present the modernistic theme of Tess of the D’Urbervilles--the alienations of human beings in the process of Western industri-alization and modernization.关键词
