Transient temperature field model for dam seepage

Abstract
In order to study the distribution of temperature fields around the leakage passage in the early period of dam seepage, the concentrated leakage passage can be regarded as a circular column based on its own characteristics. Based on two heat exchange patterns, heat conduction and heat convection in rock and soil media around the leakage passage, a transient temperature field model for dam seepage is established. According to the determined boundary and initial conditions, an equation for the temperature distribution in the leakage passage is derived by the separation of variables. The model is applied to the piping area of Shijiao reach of Beijiang Levee. The measured temperature data are substituted into the model, and the seepage velocity is obtained. The calculated results show that the seepage velocity obtained from the temperature field model is close to that gained from the isotope tracer method, and the feasibility of the proposed model is validated.关键词
