Temporal and spatial distributions of dissolved inorganic nitrogen in the Shenzhen Bay and its adjacent zone from 2000 to 2010

Abstract
Based on the data obtained from monthly cruises from 2000 to 2010, temporal and spatial distributions of dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) concentration in the Shenzhen Bay and its adjacent zone were briefly presented and discussed. The composition and sources of DIN were approached by combining with the salinity (S), ammonia nitrogen (NH3-N), nitrite nitrogen (NO2-N) and nitrate nitrogen (NO3-N) measurements. The results showed that the multi-year averaged DIN concentration was (2.445±1.841) mg·L-1 in the Shenzhen Bay and (0.517±0.366) mg·L-1 in the coastal waters of the eastern Lingdingyang Estuary. The intra-annual variability of the DIN concentration was characterized with higher in low water periods than high water periods in the Shenzhen Bay, and with an evident annual periodicity with the highest in summer and the lowest in winter in the Lingdingyang Estuary. During the 11-year study period, the inter-annual variability of the DIN concentration had witnessed a slightly increase trend in the Lingdingyang Estuary, and an increase trend from 2000 to 2004 and a decrease trend from 2005 to 2010 in the Shenzhen Bay. The average fractions of various species of DIN were changed with orders of NH3-N>NO3-N>NO2-N in the Shenzhen Bay and NO3-N>NH3-N>NO2-N in the Lingdingyang Estuary. A significantly negative correlation was found between the DIN and S. The DIN fraction resulted from the terrestrial origin was estimated at about 77.9% in the coastal waters of the eastern Lingdingyang Estuary and more than 92%in the Shenzhen Bay by a two-component mixing mass balance model.关键词
