历史上对于司马迁撰写《史记》的宗旨有诸多说法，其中较为著名的有完成父志说、实录说、谤书说、发愤著书说、成一家之言说等。这些说法有一些依据，但往往失之偏颇，不能概括《史记》全部内容。对于司马迁撰写《史记》的宗旨应该有整体思维，将《史记》作为一个整体来考察，同时不能持一成不变的观点，要实事求是，结合司马迁的人生经历去探讨其撰史宗旨的变化。
