Abstract

BACKGROUND:Al ogeneic tendon graft is an ideal method to repair tendon defects. But post-transplantation rejections limit the use of al ogeneic tendons. <br> OBJECTIVE:To investigate the effect of acel ular tendon of Banna mini-pig inbred-lines on repair of rabbit Achiles tendon, and then to evaluate the feasibility and validity of porcine-derived xenogeneic graft. <br> METHODS:Forty Japanese white rabbits were enrol ed to prepare Achil es tendon defect models of the both hind legs, and then were randomly divided into two groups:acel ular porcine tendon group treated with acel ular tendon from Banna mini-pig inbred-lines and autologous tendon group treated with rabbit autologous tendon. End-to-end anastomosis was performed with a 3-0 tendon thread using improved HEMI-KESSLER method. <br> RESULTS AND CONCLUSION:Within 2 weeks post transplantation, there were no significant differences in white blood cel count and C-reactive protein level between the two groups (P>0.05). Local reactions in the two groups after transplantation were few, the wound healed at stage Ⅰ, and flexor ankle function returned to normal. Histological results exhibited no lymphocytic infiltration, but interconnected col agen fibers at tendon suture site. These findings indicate that acel ular tendons from Banna mini-pig inbred-lines can successful y reconstruct defected rabbit Achil es tendon with good histocompatibility and little rejection.
