Abstract

Coal can be gasified in oxygen-blown or air-blown operation of gasifiers, which will greatly affect the system configuration and techno-economic performance of integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) power plants. Other than that, the adoption of various CO2 capture technologies will bring new characteristics for IGCC, which is an attractive aspect to research into. Six IGCC power plants based on transport gasifierswere developed to investigate the relative costs and benefits of oxygen-blown or air-blown gasification and of MDEA or Selexol CO2 capture technologies. The results show that, between the two CO2 capture technologies, Selexol process is preferred for both oxygen-blown and air-blown plants. More energy penalty will be introduced by this method for the air-blown plant. The net efficiency of the air-blown plant is higher than that of the oxygen-blown plant by 0.46 percentage points without CO2 capture, but lower by 0.14 percentage points with 90% of CO2 being removed. However, the air-blown IGCC plant has obvious advantages in terms of cost. The generation cost the air-blown plant is higher than that of the oxygen-blown plant by about 10 Yuan/(MW⋅h) even if CO2 capture is considered.
