Motion performance of different types of semisubmersible platforms in deep water

Abstract
The motion performance of semisubmersible platforms is of vital importance during the concept design stage, and the performance is largely decided by the floater's type. By analyzing the floater's charac-teristics of major foreign semisubmersible platforms, this paper establishes eight design schemes for pon-toon, column, and bracing, and applies the numerical method to hydrodynamic performance calculation for scheme-A1. The result's credibility is further verified through model experiments. Based on this theory, the motion performance of the eight platform schemes are predicted respectively, and the comprehensive perfor-mance is then obtained with the method of weighting. Through comparison, it is concluded that the floater has great influence on the motion performance, and sharp pontoon, tapered column, and tubular bracing types demonstrate better comprehensive performance. In brief, the research provides a worthy reference for the type selection of semisubmersible platforms during the concept design stage.关键词
