Abstract

With a clamped stepped beam as an example, the experiment method for measurement of the volume displacement using PVDF (Polyvinylidene fluoride) arrays was studied. The arrays of PVDF films with the same rectangular segments were uniformly attached to the surface of the stepped beam as sensors. The frequency response functions between the excitation force and the output signals of the PVDF arrays were measured. The output signals of the PVDF arrays were multiplied by appropriate weights which were designed by the combination of the pseudo-inverse method with the truncated singular value decomposition (TSVD) method to gain the volume displacement of the stepped beam. Experimental results show that using the PVDF array designed by this method can accurately measure the volume displacement. This method has the advantages that it does not need the structural modal information, the additional mass of the array is negligible and it is independent of the excitation locations.
