Abstract

With the increasing capacity of the power grid, the reversible pumped-storage hydropower station as a special pow-er supply with the functions of load balancing, frequency regulation and phase modulation and emergency reserve demonstrates its advantages of flexibility and quick response in ensuring the safe, stable and economical operation of the power system. Back-to-back starting serves as a convenient, alternative way to start a reversible pumped-storage station when failures occur to the static frequency converter used in the normal starting mode. Based on a test of back-to-back starting in a large pumped-stor-age station, the dragging process of the units and the starting process of the dragged unit are explained. The problems in the drag-ging test are taken as an example, and the impacts of excitation, opening process of guide vanes and sub-synchronous over cur-rent protection on the staring process are analyzed. According to the field shakedown test and operation experience, directed solu-tions are proposed to meet the reliability index of the units.
