Abstract

Objective To study the early prelingual auditory development of 0-9-month-old infants after early hearing aid fitting.Methods The design of this study was longitudinal and prospective. The infant-toddler meaningful auditory integration scale (IT-MAIS) was used to evaluate 43 infants diagnosed with moderate, severe, and profound sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) and fitted with hearing aids bilaterally before 9 months old. The early prelingual auditory development of all subjects was evaluated with IT-MAIS before hearing aid fitting, and 1, 3, 6, 12 months after fitting.Results The mean IT-MAIS scores showed significant improvements as time of hearing aid use increased for all three groups (P<0.05). The one-way analysis of variance showed that there were significant differences in the IT-MAIS scores among the three groups before and 1,3 and 6 months after hearing aid fitting(P<0.05),but no significant differences 12 months after fitting(P>0.05). The multiple comparisons indicated that there was no significant difference between the moderate and severe group before and 1,3 and 6 months after fitting(P>0.05),but were significant differences between the moderate and profound group at each assessment interval(P<0.05). There was no significant difference between the severe and profound group 1 month after fitting (P>0.05), but were significant differences before fitting and 3 and 6 months after fitting(P<0.05).Conclusion The early prelingual auditory abilities of infants develop significantly with the use of hearing aids within the first year after fitting. The duration of hearing aid use significantly affects the auditory abilities of infants. IT-MAIS can be used as a routine assessment program in infants with hearing loss after early hearing aid fitting since it can provide important auditory development information in addition to conventional hearing tests.
