Estimation of greenhouse gas emissions from intensive livestock farming in Yinchuan area

Abstract

According to the greenhouse gas emission factors, by using the emission coefficient method recommended by the IPCC Guidelines(2006), this study estimated the greenhouse gas emission from the livestock and poultry in Yinchuan city from 2001 to 2013. The results indicated that the total methane emission from livestock and poultry in Yinchuan city from 2001 to 2013 was 211 746.05 t, and the annual average methane emission was 16 288.16 t. The results showed that the total emission of nitrous oxide from livestock and poultry in Yinchuan from 2001 to 2013 was 6 827.17 t, and the annual average emission of nitrous oxide was 525.17 t. Among them, the enteric fermentation of livestock and poultry was an important source of methane emission, the total methane emission from the enteric fermentation reached 183 144.98 t, accounting for 86.49%of the total methane emission from livestock and poultry. The methane emission from livestock and poultry manure was another import source of greenhouse gas emission, it was 28 601.07 t from 2001 to 2013, according for 13.51%of the total methane emission from livestock and poultry. The study showed that the total greenhouse gas emission from livestock and poultry in Yinchuan city exhibited a rising trend from 2001 to 2013. Among different kinds of animals, the enteric fermentation of cattle had the largest contribution to methane emission, it achieved 139 918.07 t, the percentage of the enteric fermentation from cattle was reached 66.08%of the total methane mission. The live cattle manure had the greatest contribution to greenhouse gas emission, it achieved 23 428.42 t, the percentage of the greenhouse gas emission from cattle manure was reached 66.13%of the total manure.
