Abstract

With activated carbon as an adsorbent,and methylene blue (MB)as adsorbate,the effects of factors including dosage of adsorbent,adsorption time and temperature on the adsorption properties of methylene blue onto activated carbon were investigated.The adsorption kinetics and isotherms were analyzed by the pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order kinetics models and the Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption isotherm models respectively. The experiment showed that the maximum adsorption capacity of methylene blue onto activated carbon was 249.081 mg/g under the conditions of dosage of activated carbon 0.667 g/L,adsorption time 360 min and reaction temperature 298 K.The adsorption reaction was rapid within the first 30 min and reached equilibrium in about 360 min.The adsorption kinetics conformed to the pseudo-second-order kinetics model.The adsorption reaction was an exothermic process.The isothermal adsorption process accorded with Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption isotherm models,whose correlation coefficients were higher than 0.99.Activated carbon is an excellent adsorbent for the removal of methylene blue from aqueous solution.
