Abstract
Objective To assess the efficacy of postauricular injection of methylprednisolone in treating sudden total hearing loss. Methods Data of 48 cases of total sudden hearing loss treated by the authors from 2013 to present were collected. The cases were divided into a treatment and a control group, randomly. The treatment group received postauricular injection of methylprednisolone. The number of frequencies over 250 to 4000 Hz at which average thresholds were within useful hearing range (the“banana area”) and improve-ment of thresholds over five frequency bands (125-250 Hz, 125-500 Hz, 500-2000 Hz, 4000-8000 Hz and 250-4000 Hz) were compared between the two groups. Results The numbers of frequencies in the“banana”area were 1.5 for the treatment group and 0 for the control group (P=0.004). PTA improvements in the treat-ment group were 29.25±5.14 dB vs 14.00±4.66 dB for 125-250 Hz (P=0.028), 29.67±4.36 dB vs 14.77±4.38 dB for 125-500 Hz (P=0.021), 26.50±3.60 dB vs 16.52±3.77 dB for 500-2000 Hz, 26.00±7.04 dB vs 12.28± 2.93 dB for 4000-8000 Hz, and 26.99±3.75 dB vs 15.40±3.63dB for 250-4000 Hz, respectively. Conclusions Postauricular methylprednisolone injection is an effective therapy for sudden total hearing loss, especially for low-frequency involvement.关键词
