Comparison of Fracture Toughness Estimation Methods Based on Charpy Impact Energy

Abstract
Fracture toughness is generally taken as a critical parameter for structural integrity assessment. However,sometimes it is difficult to conduct a toughness test in practice due to a lack of testing material, testing budget and time limitation.For simplicity,it is often estimated from Charpy impact energy by em-pirical correlation formulas.In order to better service for engineering applications,relative empirical corre-lation formulas were reviewed.Meanwhile,their applicability,conservation and effectiveness were analyzed based on experimental data collected from literature.The results indicated that SC,RLB and BL correla-tion formulas can provide the best estimation.BRS and BR correlation formulas can be employed for a-broad steels other than domestic steels.The predictions based on IWT formulas are not ideal for all inves-tigated steels.The empirical formulas derived by abroad database can′t be used directly for domestic steels,and appropriate adjustment is needed for conservation.The distribution trends of fracture toughness estimated by all correlation formulas except IWT formulas are in agreement with master curves.It might bea feasible scheme to estimate the master curve from predicted fracture toughness.关键词
