Development of 1.5 MW High Power PSM Power Supply

Abstract
We developed a 1.5 MW pulse step modulation (PSM) power supply for klystron test bed, and introduced three main advantages of PSM system, namely, good reliability, compatibility of pulse and DC mode, fast switch and protection speed.Moreover, we presented main parameters and design methods of system, studied and modeled multiple windings transformer, an important component of power system with Magnetic Component Tool (MCT) of SABER software, and analyzed stored energy in stray capacitances.The principles of PSM modules were introduced.Control unit which adopted microcontroller and FPGA to realize data and command communication with master-slave mode and its control strategy were discussed in detail.Combined with introduction of Klystron arc fast protection circuits, short circuit energy and evaluation were experimentally investigated.The results indicate the discharged energy is less than 5 J, a safe level for Klystron and other vacuum electronics devices.With a resister load, power supply is tested under various conditions, and output voltage and current waveforms are given.The test results show that system can reach 75 kV/20 A with 1% ripple, and arc protection time is less than 10 μs.PSM power supply can meet system requirements, therefore, it can be used not only for Tokamak but also for high power microwave devices test.关键词
