Abstract
Objective In order to improve understanding of the POEMS syndrome, we explored the main clinical fea-tures of the disease. Methods Clinical data of five patients diagnosed with the POEMS syndrome, during January 2012 and December 2014 were retrospectively analyzed. Results There were 3 men and 2 women, aged 48 to 71. 4 patients were mis-diagnosed in the early stage. One patient was misdiagnosed as having Green-Barre syndrome and multiple myeloma, 2 patients were diagnosed as having numbness with unknown causes, 1 patient was misdiagnosed as having Castleman disease. All the patients underwent bone marrow examination, serum protein electrophoresis and immunofixation electrophoresis and their diag-nosis was confirmed after multidisciplinary consultations. Peripheral nerve injury improved in two patients after chemotherapy. The other three patients received Vitamin treatment but peripheral nerve injury did not improve and then the patient was dis-charged from hospital and lost in follow-up. Conclusion POEMS syndrome is a multisystemic disorder syndrome. When a patient presents polyneuropathy with multisystemic disorder, we should conduct a comprehensive assessment to reduce the mis-diagnosis and mistreatment rates.关键词
