Abstract

This study was conducted to investigate the effects of different calcium supplementation modes on production performance, tibia quality and serum biochemical indices of laying hens, with an aim to determine the optimal supplementation mode and amount of calcium in production. Four hundred and eighty 18-week-old Hy-Line Gray commercial layers were divided into 4 groups with 4 replicates each and 30 hens in each repli-cate. The calcium was supplemented at 18 weeks of age and when the laying rate was 5%, 50% and 90%, re-spectively. The calcium supplementation modes were: 2. 00%, 2. 20%, 2. 40% and 3. 75% for group Ⅰ;2.00%, 2.50%, 3.00% and 3.75% for groupⅡ;2.00%, 3.00%, 3.75% and 3.75% for groupⅢ;2.00%, 3.75%, 3.75% and 3.75% for group Ⅳ. The experiment lasted for 9 weeks. The results showed as follows:1) the laying rate of hens in group Ⅲ was significantly higher than that in group Ⅰ and group Ⅳ ( P<0.05) . No significant differences were observed in average daily egg weight among all groups ( P>0.05) . 2) The tibia strength, weight and calcium content in groupⅢwere significantly higher than those in groupⅠand groupⅡ( P<0.05) , while were not significantly different compared with groupⅣ ( P>0.05) . 3) Serum calcium con-tent in group Ⅰ and groupⅡ was significantly higher than that in groupⅢ and groupⅣ when the laying rate was 50% ( P<0.05) . And serum calcium content in groupⅣwas significantly higher than that in groupⅠand group Ⅱ (P<0.05), but not significantly different compared with group Ⅲ (P>0.05) when laying rate was 90%. In conclusion, the 3.00%, 3.75% and 3.75% calcium supplementation level when the laying rate was 5%, 50% and 90% can improve laying rate and tibia quality of laying hens, and avoid calcium waste.
