Effects of Arginine Infusion through Jugular Vein on Milk Performance and Casein Synthesis of Mid-Lactation Cows

Abstract
The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of arginine infusion through jugular vein on milk performance and casein synthesis of mid-lactation cows. Six healthy lactating cows at similar lactation sta-ges with similar body weight, parity, milk yield and body condition were divided into 3 groups ( 2 cows for each group) in the 3 × 3 Latin square trail, which were casein model group ( control group) , arginine infusion group and alanine iso-nitrogen group ( equal nitrogen amount to arginine infusion group) . Each period lasted for 22 days with 7-day infusion plus 15-day interval per period. Milk performance, casein contents and casein gene expressions were detected. The results showed as follows: 1 ) on day 5 of infusion, arginine infusion group was significantly higher than casein model group in the contents of milk protein and milk non-fat milk solids ( P<0.05); on day 6, arginine infusion group was significantly higher in milk fat percentage compared to alanine iso-nitrogen group (P<0.05). 2) α-casein content in casein model group was significantly lower than that in the other 2 groups ( P<0.05); β-casein content had no significant difference among groups ( P>0.05); κ-casein content of arginine infusion group was the highest, and was significantly higher than that in the other 2 groups ( P<0.05) . 3) Arginine infusion group had significantly higher expression levels in αs1-ca-sein gene ( CSN1S1) andαs2-casein gene ( CSN1S2) compared to those in the other 2 groups ( P<0.05) . It is concluded that arginine infusion increases the contents of α-casein and κ-casein in milk, as well as expression levels of CSN1S1 and CSN1S2 in mammary tissue from dairy cows, which is contributed to the improvements of milk protein percentage and milk quality.关键词
