Abstract

In order to reduce the potential driving risk of the highway reconstruction project caused by the reservation of median separator, it is important to optimize and evaluate the safety of length and loca⁃tion of median separator in entrance and exit of highway interchanges and service areas. Based on the in⁃terchange flow theory, critical gap theory, queuing theory, and the analysis of driving behavior character⁃istics of interchange and conflict, taking Luoyang-Sanmenxia Expressway reconstruction project as anexample, the length of the initiating section, the middle section and the terminal section of the median separator opening were calculated, and the method of setting up the opening length of the old road at the interchange and service area before and after the one side widening was determined. After the analysis of its safety, the rational location of the median separator opening was confirmed considering the layout of the notice sign boards of the approaches. The research results show that the length and the position set⁃ting of the median separator opening of the expressway reconstruction project can be effectively acquired by quantitative calculation, which can effectively induce the driver to pass in and out the interchange flow zone with safety and comfort.
