Abstract

In order to investigate the effects of tipping paper perforation parameters on the release of tar and seven harmful components (CO, HCN, NNK, NH3, B[a]P, phenol, and crotonaldehyde) in mainstream cigarette smoke, cigarettes with tipping paper of different perforation levels were prepared. The filter ventilation level of the prepared cigarettes and the deliveries of tar and the seven harmful components in mainstream smoke were determined. The effects of tipping paper parameters (perforation size, perforation area, number of holes, number of rows and perforation band width) on the release of tar and the seven harmful components were analyzed with partial least squares regression (PLS). The results showed that: 1) With the increase of filter ventilation level, the release of tar and the seven harmful components decreased. 2) The perforation area on tipping paper was the main factor affecting the release of tar and the seven harmful components. 3) Perforation area, number of holes, number of rows and perforation band width negatively correlated the release of tar and the seven harmful components; while at the same filter ventilation rate, perforation size positively correlated to the release of tar, CO, HCN, NH3, B[a]P, phenol and crotonaldehyde.
