Abstract

Seismic performance of converter valve in high seismic intensity area is significant for the safety operation of ultra high voltage direct current (UHVDC) converter substations. Based on a±800kV UHVDC converter station, a finite element model of the converter valve and hall was established and time history analysis of the model was carried out. Suspension insulators of valve were simulated by nonlinear springs. The results show that displacement response at the bottom of valve can reach more than 1 m. The nonlinearity of insulator makes the vertical acceleration response of valve very large and valves may bounce during earthquake. The amplification of earthquake wave by hall leads to a rise of the horizontal acceleration response of valve but has little influence on the displacement response of valve. As the frequencies of local higher modes of valve are close to natural frequency of hall, resonance between valve and hall can occur and this can trigger a huge horizontal acceleration response at the top of valve. It is suggested that larger diameter insulators should be used to prevent the buckling of insulator and extra measures should be taken to limit the displacement at the bottom of the valve.
