Abstract

ABSTRACT:Modular multilevel converter (MMC) based HVDC system has shown its significant engineering prospects. However, even super-large scale accurate MMC equivalent model cannot satisfy the requirements of the future HVDC grid. Therefore, the selection of the optimal MMC voltage level which can get the compromise of larger model accuracy and lower computation burden is of great importance. The benchmark model was previously developed MMC Thevenin equivalent model with 450 sub-modules per phase arm, i.e. 451-level MMC model. In order to accurately showcase the detailed transient characteristics of each MMC model, the critical solution time step of MMC was proposed and validated which was applied in this whole paper. Then according to the relative errors of the reduced-level MMC model compared with the benchmark model, this paper adopted the proposed improved analytic hierarchy process (IAHP) to integrate the relative errors of all the main electrical variables into one comprehensive relative error of this level. The series of MMC models have the same system parameters of the benchmark model and the steady-state, AC transients and DC transients were simulated to get the relative error curves and the computation timings of all these scenarios. Using normalization and curve fitting methods, the MMC model with optimal voltage level to substitute the 451-level MMC model under specific circumstances were obtained. Then the IAHP was used again to combine the three relative error curves to one comprehensive curve. Depending on requirements of the accuracy and efficiency in different situations, the optimal MMC voltage levels of varied weight ratios are selected. Finally, this optimal MMC model is simulated and validated on PSCAD/EMTDC by comparing with the benchmark 451-level MMC fast simulation model.
