Abstract

Propane has uniform heat energy distribution with flame temperature (500℃) lower than acetylene. Coatings with high hardness and dense microstructure were obtained via optimization of spray parameters and adding propane in oxyacetylene gas. The effects of propane on structure and mechanical properties of WC-10Co4Cr coatings prepared by detonation gun spray process were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS), metallurgical microscope and Vickers microhardness meter. The results show that propane can reduce oxidation and decarburization of tungsten carbide coating. With the increase of propane gas flow, the hardness and the bonding strength of the coatings increase first and then decrease, while the porosity shows the opposite. The coating performance reaches optimum when the propane flow rate is 3.3 L⋅min−1, and the cross section Vickers microhardness is 13.08 GPa, with porosity and bonding strength of 0.8% and 150 MPa, respectively.
